Poster Analysis

The image below is the poster of a film called Taxi Driver. The reason as to why I decided to choose this particular film is because it relates to my film. The reason for this is because my thriller film is also a psychological thriller. The only difference is the fact that his film is a film that was directed by Martin Scorsese. This film is also created in america and was exhibited in 1976.

When we first look at the poster, the first thing that out eyes go to is the man in the middle. This could purposely have been done in order to show the importance of that particular character. The fact that he is in the middle shows that he is likely to be a character that we will see throughout the film, however we are unable to tell if he is the antagonist or the protagonist. Due to the fact that the film name is 'Taxi Driver' and there is a taxi behind Robert Denero, this could potentially empathise on the fact that Robert Denero could possibly be the important taxi driver in the cause of the film. By looking at the poster, it already raises engimas for the film. The reason for this is because the audience will begin to ask questions as to why he is standing there alone with a taxi behind him,

In terms of his clothing, Robert Denero is a leather jacket. This could represent the typical man who is a criminal within his city. However, he is also wearing dark trousers, this could possibly represent the fact that he is powerful throughout the film, or it could even represent the fact that he could possibly be a hero in the cause of the film. The fact that he is wearing a red shirt could represent the fact that he is evil, or the fact that he may even be in danger over the cause of the film, however its difficult to be able to tell through the poster alone.

In terms of the camera, this also plays a huge role in the poster of this film. The fact that its a long shot showing his whole body could show his power. The camera is also looking up to him slightly, this could possibly represent that over the cause of the film, many people look up to him as a leader. The fact that the camera is looking up to him could also show his musculinity. The fact that his body takes up the majority of the poster could also show that he could be very important over the cause of the film and that we see him very often. In terms of the background and the mise-en-scene, its very dark and he is standing alone in the darkness with a taxi behind. This is a powerful image because it cannotes the fact that there may be alot of danger in the cause of this psychological thriller. The fact that he is around darkness connotates mystery and creates enigmas for the audience making them wonder exactly what is he doing there. The poster also shows that Robert Denero isn't looking directly at the camera, so it could also make the audience wonder who/what is he looking at. The lighting shows that the film only uses natural street lights.

The image of the taxi behind Robert Denero also creates enigmas. The reason for this is because it makes the audience wonder who is inside it, why its there and the purpose of it being a taxi and not another vehical. The fact that the image of the taxi is there shows that Robert Denero is standing next to a road. This coud possibly represent that the majority of the film is set out on the streets, it could also represent the fact that it could be fast pace because of there being cars and streets.

The titles at the bottom also play a huge role. In my opinion the colours used in the title meets the conventions of the thriller genre. For example, red was used. This could empathise on many things, for instance it could represent on the fact that there could be a hint of love in this thriller genre, it could empathise the fact that there could be alot of anger and blood throughout this film. These are both conventions of the thriller genre. The fact that red is used within the titles of this poster, it also connotates that there could be alot of danger in the cause of this film. The title was written in bold, therefore this could have been done so that the audience automatically look at the title first before looking at anything else.  There was also black writing used on the poster near the titles.

The way this links to a general thriller film is because it meets the conventions of a thriller through the props used and what the colours could possibly connotate.

Nine Frame Structure Analysis

Here is an image of the a 9 frame analysis of a thriller film called SE7EN

Each frame have a particular meaning and a level of importance to the film. As you can see from the image above, the first nine shots involve titles as well. The titles all have a particular purpose and its generally put in order of importance.

The first frame is the most important frame due to the fact that it is the first frame that everyone sees once the film starts. In this case, we can see something that looks like a book with white writing on top of it. The white writning are the credits of the film. Both the background and the writing has a particular purpose to the film and is all done for a reason. For example, the white writing is something that we see in most thriller films, therefore that could have purposely been done to signify the fact that the film could be of a thriller genre. Another reason as to why the writing could have been white is because they may have wanted the white writing to stand out from the dark background to make it very clear for the audience to see.

The second frame shows the who the film is by. It shows that the film is by David Facher. This is also written in white writing so it stands out for the audience to see. However, the background image changes to something else. In this case its someones hand, but it looks abnormal. I personally think that this was purposely done in order to give the audience a rough idea of things that could happen during the cause of the film. It shows that there are two hands on a piece of paper, it could be trying to raise the enigma for the audience from early on in the film. It could make them wonder why the character has two hands on paper with a red line inbetween it.

Frame three is unique in my opinion. The reason for this is ebcause it has no credits on it therefore it could have purposely been done to empathise the fact that the directors want the audience to concentrate on the image that is being shown. The image shows someone holding something sharp like a razor or a blade. This is another convention of a thriller genre because this prop can be seen as a weapon that an antagonist would use to harm a protagonist. We also see a close up shot of hands again, this could be done to empathise on the power that hands may have throughout the cause of the film.

The fourth frame is one of the most important frames out of all nine frames, the reason for this is because it shows the title of the film. Its written in capital in order to make it clear that this is the title of the film and it has a very dark background so it stands out. We also see notepads in the image as well. In my opinion this was done to make it clear that this may be a prop that we see time and time again throughout the film.

The fifth frame shows a character writing on a piece of paper. This is where things begin to become alot more clearer now due to the fact that in a few of the previous frames, it involves notepads, paper and hands. This is done to raise and enigma in my opinion, the reason for this is because the audience is unable to see what is being written on the piece of paper. The fact that the character is writing on white paper could make the audience wonder what the character is writing due to the fact that it can potentially be anything. Through this frame, its automatically left the audience on a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger is a successful convention of a thriller genre.

Frame six shows a unique image the reason for this is because its a shot of someone drawing a little boy. This is important because it could show that the film may have something to do with a young boy. In the drawing it shows that the person that is being drawn is being blind folded, therefore they are unable to see what may happen to them throughout the cause of the film. This is another thing that can create an enigma because it has the potential to make the audience wonder exactly why a boy has been drawn blindfolded for. It also has a dark background as well, this can show that the boy may be trapped in darkness and he is the light. It could represent anything in my opinion. There are also credits on this particular image showing who was in charge of the casting of the film.

The seventh frame shows the hand of someone. Throughout the frames, the camera has empathised on hands, paper and writing therefore I personally believe that this image is contineing the sequence. However with this partcular image, it has credits on it. This one shows who it was produced and directed by therefore it has a huge level of importance.

The eighth frame is also another awkward frame which creates enigmas for the audience. The reason for this is because it shows someone sowing paper together. This is something that nobody would consider as normal therefore it could make the audience ask questions as to why this is happening. The fact that it could be seen as an enigma is a convention of the thriller genre. This frame also doesn't have credits on it therefore it could mea that the directors want the focus to be directly on the image in order to make the audience aware of it.

The ninth and final frame is a shot of something which looks like words wripped out of a newspaper. This is a typical thing that the antagonist is likely to do therefore this image could represent that the antagonist is trying to mask something up at the beginning of the film.

Non-thriller title analysis

In order for me to see the clear difference between the titles in thriller films, and the titles is non-thriller films, I thought that it would be a very good idea to do some research on the non-thriller titles. The reason as to why I did this is so that I can get a clear rough understanding of what is thriller and what isn't thriller. When carrying out this assignment, i analysed five different Non thriller movies on paper. I carried out this assignment on paper, therefore below are images of all the research i obtained when answering the questions. (Some images are faulty and won't rotate, however you can simply click to enlarge them).

.

Existing Filming Production Company Research

There are many film companies in the market nowadays which are all in the business for world dominance and success. The filming production company that I will be carrying out my research on is called: 20th Century Fox. The main reason as to why I have decided to carry out my research within this particular company is because of their overall success in the business in previous years. I believe that there is a lot to find out about them and the information found could possibly turnout to be very interesting.

When were they founded?
20th Century Fox was founded in May of 1935, founded by: Darryl F. Zanuck, Joseph Schenck, Raymond Griffith and William Goetz.

What they have done?
20th century fox having done a lot in the film and TV industry. They have created a lot of films for all ages and even programmes and cartoons. For example, they are popular for films such as: Ice Age, Star Wars, Alien, Home Alone, and cartoons such as The Simpsons and Family Guy.

What impact they have made on the film industry?
They have made a huge impact on the film industry in terms of helping them market and distribute their products. They have helped many films in terms of advertising and getting their film out there especially in the major cinemas.

Characters and Roles

Here are all the characters that were involved within the two minute opening. I will put an image of each of the characters, and I will also explain their role within the film.

This is Alisha, she is the protagonist within the film. She plays the role of an innocent young teenager simply wanted to meet and hang out with someone. Shes the one that looses her life in the cause of the film, however this isn't said in the opening two minutes.

This is Robert, played by Darren in the film. He is the antagonist in the cause of the film. In the film, his role is to go out and rape and kill young teenage girls, however the audience is yet to know the reason as to why he does it.

This is Kerry who plays the role of the mother of Alisha. In the film, she is simply the one who allows Alisha to go out without supervision and she is the one that is seen to be responsible for the death of Alisha due to the fact that she aloud her daughter to go out for long hours.

This is Rianna. She is a close friend of Kerry. She is the person who helps Kerry get through her struggles in the cause of the film. She is the friend that will always be there for her and always there when Kerry needs. She has also been a lifelong friend of Kerry.

Main Task

Production Company

The Production name of our company is called SJDR. This stands for: Shannon Jamal Darren Rianna productions. The reason why we chose this particular company name is because we felt that it will be catchy and we felt that it would be very easy for people to remember. I believe its short and snappy and its very straightforward.

Initially, we created this production logo ourselves. The reason for this is because we couldn't find any other good images from anywhere to make the production look good. We took the background from a google image. We then used photo shop edit and include the the words S, J, D, R productions. After the words were incorporated, we thought that it wold be very necessary to add abit of colour and a small image to make the logo look abit more better. This is why we decided to get an image of a camera to represent that it was a filming company. We simply did this to make the production logo look abit more interesting and eye catching.

Target Audience of our Film

In order to find a set target audience, we had decided to go on the peal and dean website: http://business.pearlanddean.com/. The reason for this is because we wanted to look at films similar to ours and try and give it around the same target audience and the same certificate. The way we did this, is we found a particular film, in this case we used 'Panic Room,' due to the fact that it has similar conent to ours, and we looked up on the 'Pearl and Dean' website as to what type of target audience they had. Below shows the image of this.

Through this particular website, we came to a conclusion as to who our film will be aimed at and the certificate of the film, as well as what age group and which social class. Rianna, Shannon and I decided that we will give our film a 15 certificate rating. The reason for this is because of some of the content that it has. Another reason is because some of the props used aren't really suitable for anyone below the age of 15. We also decided that we were going to aim our film at both genders in order to market to a wider target audience and maximise profit in the sales from our film. We mainly wanted to aim our film at women though, so that they would be aware of activities that happens to teenagers. We also decided that we will be aiming it at all social classes. In terms of age, we wanted to aim our film at both teenagers from 15+ right the way to parents upto age 44.

Photographs of our group planning
In order to have completed this task successfully, we believed that it was important for us to work together as a close team. Therefore that is exactly what we had done. In order for us to get our main task looking as good as we possibly could have, it was clear that we had to all find time to always sit together and incorporate all of ideas into one. Our group had regular group meetings to see if we had any new ideas that we could have added to the group in order to make the film look even better. We also even set ourselves homework to go out and do some research so that we can input it into our film as we were going along. We thought that it would be a good idea if we showed the blog viewers images of our group working together as a team. The images below are simply images taken when we were once planning together.

These are one of the first images taken. In this image it shows that we are working as a group to complete story boards in preparation for our upcoming film. This particular group photo shows myself and Jamal writing down ideas with the help of both Rianna and Shannon.

This is another one of our group photos. However this one just shows us getting on with our work and putting all of our ideas onto paper. The good thing about this is the fact that we all spread out the amount of work equally and we all knew exactly what we were set out to complete.

Initial Planning Ideas

During our times of group work, we also did some planning as well as some team research. When we were having our group conversations and inputting ideas, we included research on alot of different things that we thought would be relevant to our film. For example, research on the conventions of the thriller genre and finding out whether our film meets these conventions. We also had a beginning, middle and end plan structure regarding the activities that we would have liked to take during the creation of the film. Below are some images with a brief explanation of the planning ideas in which we incorporated during our time of group planning.

The image on the right hand side is evidence of our group carrying out some research on the conventions of the thriller genre. Although we had a rough insight of what they were anyway, we wanted to do further research so that we could try and relate it all back to our thriller genre when performing the main task. This is one of the brainstorms that we found very useful in preparing our main task because it makes planning a lot more straight forward knowing that we had information of the conventions already. We thought that by brainstorming ideas of the conventions of a thriller, it would be a good way to make sure that we include conventions into the main task. Another reason as to why we done this is because we thought that it would gives us some ideas as to what to include within the main task. (Unfortunately I couldn't rotate the image)

The image on the left hand side is an image showing another thing that the group planned. We thought that it would be a good idea if we looked at the advantages and the disadvantages of questionnaires. The reason as to why we done this is because during the research section, we were asked to complete a questionnaire related to the thriller genre. We thought it would be a good idea to look at the advantages and disadvantages of them so that we can determine the overall benefit of carrying out the questionnaires for our film. (Unfortunately again, i was unable to rotate this image)
The third image shows how were looking into the problems that may have been caused whilst filming. The reason as to why we thought that it would be essential to do this, is so that we would be aware of all the problems that could occur when filming, and so that we will be able to find ideas to prevent the dangers from early on. The image shows the research that we done when doing this. With this particular section, we all done it individually, however we discussed all of our ideas into the group and we also exchanged ideas.

The image on the left shows some of the planning that was done in order to construct the main task in full. When we were planning, we decided that we want to talk about what we think should happen in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Here shows some of the ideas that we put into the planning of the film. For example, we talked about how we wanted to make the camera view the characters from different prospectives, we used this opportunity to discuss what the ways in which both the antagonist and the protagonist will communicate with each other, we even planned how it will end.
The final image showing our initial ideas for our main film was the planning and ideas incorporated as to what we feel the best script would be to match the film. The image basically shows us as a group drafting and thinking of ideas as to what we should include in the script to make it match the conventions of the thriller genre. Its slightly untidy due to the fact that we kept changing ideas.

Photographs of locations

During the process of completing our main task film. We thought that it would be a good idea to take pictures of the locations where we base our main task at. Below are all of the images of the location that we took on the night of competing the film. Underneath each image will be a brief sentence on where the image was used.

This is an image of one of the locations that were used within the making of my two minute opening to a thriller. This was the used in the scene in which Darren was communicating with Alisha on the laptop. This is also the same place where Darren picked up his props just before he left the house. The only difference is the fact that the lighting of the room was different.

This is another one of the images used within the making of the film. This was used in the scene in which Alisha was communicating with Darren on the laptop. The chair furthest away was the chair in which she was sitting on when acting in the scene. This was the first scene shwon within the two minute opening.

Here is an image of the kitchen used when completeing the two minute opening. This was used in the scene when Kerry and Rianna where having a conversation here. We set this out in the kitchen to make it look as real as possible which is why we chose here out of all possible places in the house. This is where Kerry (mum) had her friend over (Rianna)

This is an image of the front of the house when looking out from it. All the images above are from the house of the protagonist (Alisha). The reason for this is because this is where the majority of the film was set. The reason as to why we focused the empathis on Alisha is because we didn't really want to reveal the protagonist from early.

This particular image that was used is an image of the place where Alisha was getting ready before she left to meet Darren. This is her bathroom. We used this location to make the film as real as possible.

Here is a picture very similar to the one above. However this is a picture showing the house of the antagonist (Alisha).

Props List & Meanings

Our group carefully constructed a props list of all the props that we will be using. In our two minute opening, all the props that we have decided to use all have a particular purpose. We also included props that would be a convention to a thriller genre as well, for example a weapon, and we also used props that would create enigma for the audience, for example, tape. Below is a list of all the props that we used, I will also explain the reasons for why these props were used.
Knife: The image on the left hand side of the screen is an image of a knife. The reason as to why we decided to put a knife within our two minute opening is because a weapon is known to be a convention of a thriller. By adding a knife, it shows the audience that the antagonist (Darren) is out to kill, which leads to another convention of a thriller which is death. The knife also symbolises the fact that the antagonist may hurt someone.

Tape: The image on right hand side is an image of tape. This is another prop that was used in the construction of our two minute opening. The reason as to why this was included is to add some realism into the film. It’s slightly made clear in the title as to what the antagonist is set out to do therefore we included tape in order to make the film look a bit more realistic. The tape would be used to prevent the protagonist making noise.

Mobile Phone: The image on the left hand side of the screen is a mobile phone. The mobile phone was also a prop used in our two minute opening. This was used practically at the end in which Kerry (the mother of Alisha) uses her phone to call someone informing them that her daughter didn’t come home last night. This is an important prop used in our main task.

Condom: This is also another prop used to add some realism into the film. The reason we added this is to make it clear that the antagonist isn’t just to kill the protagonist. We tried to make it clear that it was a story of rape by including this prop, the reason for this is because if we were just to include a knife, then the audience may think that the antagonist is simply out to kill the protagonist. This was set out to try and make the difference and to make the storyline a lot clearer.

Teacups: We also used teacups to help make the story look a bit more realistic. The teacups was used in the section where Rianna and Kerry were talking in the kitchen. Kerry was the mother of Alisha, and we tried to add some realism in the way that we made Kerry have a friend over during the whole film. This was done to make Kerry concentrate on her daughter slightly less and give her more freedom. The teacups were used when Kerry was offering Rianna some tea. The image on the left simply shows an example of the prop.

Kettle: The kettle was another prop used and it played a vital role due to the fact that it gave us a diegetic sound. Due to the fact that it gave us a diegetic sound, it made it sound a lot more realistic because we hear the kettle boiling during the scene. This was simply another prop used to help make the film sound a lot more realistic. The image on the right shows an image of the kettle.

Laptops: This was a vital prop used within our two minute opening. We tried to make our two minute opening as modern as possible so we decided to use laptops rather than mobile phones and texting. On the laptop we used an instant messaging service called ‘Skype.’ You can see a logo of it on the left hand side of the screen. The reason as to why we wanted to use modern day technology such as Skype is because we wanted to empathise on the age of Alisha showing that now a days, teens use laptops a lot. This was the prop used at the beginning of the film showing the online communication between both the antagonist and the protagonist.

A Hoodie: The image on the right hand side of the screen was the hoodie that was used by the antagonist within our film. There are many reasons as to why we decided to use this hoodie. The first reason was to try and make the antagonist look young. We used a hoodie because in our modern day times, youths of today stereotypically wear hoodies therefore we decided to use a hoodie to also make the antagonist look young.

Watch: This is another one of the props used within our two minute opening. The image on the right shows a watch. We used a watch because we wanted to use a prop to empathise on the fact that the antagonist was taking long to come. We wanted to empathise on the fact that Alisha had been waiting a long time for Darren to come, however he took a very long time. During the 2 minute opening, we see Alisha look at the watch to signify that Darren hasn’t appeared on time.
Timeline for film opening
In order to make things a lot more clearer, we decided to make a timeline for the titles, footage, and sound. We did this so that we can try to make our film as close to a thriller as possible. The first timeline is a timeline showing the times in which the titles come up. The second one is a timeline for the sound.

Costume Planning

Here I will talk about the different costumes used for all the characters. Our group had purposely constructed a plan for the close in which the actors will use when acting. The reason for this is so that we can show clear representations of the difference between the ages and their role within the 2 minute opening of our thriller film. I will talk about all four actors that were involved with the film and exactly what their clothes could represent.

Alisha is playing the role of the protagonist and is the character that gets raped and killed in the cause of the film. However this is not revealed in the two minuted opening due to the fact that we didn't want to reveal much information and we wanted to leave it as a cliff hanger. Alisha is wearing a white t-shirt with a red cardigan on top of it. During the planning of this film, we purposely decided that we will make Alisha wear white in order to represent her innocents and purity. We tried to empathise on the fact that she was the protagonist in the clothes that she wears. We also tried to empathise that she is wearing write and that she is unaware of what will happen to her during the cause of the film.It also represents how young she is. This is another thing that we wanted to make clear to the audience. By making her wear a red cardigan, we thought that this would represent her love. The red cardigan shows that she is a lovable person and very soft. We done this in order to make the storyline slightly more clearer.

Kerry who played the role of the parent of the protagonist (Alisha), was wearing grey throughout the cause of the two minute opening to our thriller genre. The clothes that she was wearing represented her character in the film. We decided that we wanted to make her wear grey on the day so that her clothing represents her intellegence and her modisty. The reason as to why this would be good is because we wanted to try and represent that she is a smart working mum who is also very calm. We also tried to empathise on the fact that she is a parent by making her wear dull boring clothes such as grey.

Darren who played the role of the antagonist was wearing black. We had planned for Darren to wear black to represent his power in the cause of the film. The reason as to why we done this is because throughout the cause of the film, he goes out killing people and by wearing black, it shows that he has the power to do so. The reason as to why we made him wear a grey hoodie over the black top he is wearing, is to try and hide the fact that he is powerful and also evil. As a group, we decided on this because we knew that the antagonist should be dressed in dark colours in order to meet some of the conventions of the thriller genre.

Rianna who is Kerry's friend is wearing like a light brownish jumper. We decided that we will do this to represent that her friend is slightly younger than her and we did that to represent her personality.

Filming Schedule
Before doing our film, we thought it would be a really good idea to create a film schedule to stick to. The reason for this is because we thought that it would be a good way to make sure that we are doing everything correctly, everything that we planned very well. The film schedule was done so that we could see if everything was in line the way that we would've liked. The film schedule showed all the days that we spent filming, whether it was inside or outside, day or night and the characters involved. It also included the props that was used in each particular part of our 2 minute opening. Below are two images of our filming schedule.

Editing Schedule
Similar to the filming schedule, we thought it would be a good idea to keep track of the amount of time that we spent editing. We also decided to keep a close track on the people that edited on that particular day and the exact dat that some editing was done. Below are the two pages  of our editing schedule that was done.

Storyboards

These are the storyboards that we used to plan with when we were doing our group planning and this is what we stuck to when constructing the main task. Below are the two pages of storyboards for our two minute opening.

Understanding Editing Software
In order for me to get a better understanding in how to use the final cut pro, i thought that it would be a good idea for me to go and do some more research on how to use it. For example, i wanted to know how to input sounds onto it and use sounds on final cut pro. The reason for this is because when I was editing my preliminary task, our group didnt use sounds, therefore we didn't know how to put sounds into the blogger. Therefore i decided to use yotube to help me get a better insight on how to make these things. Below shows the videos that helped me get an insight of how to input sound onto my production.

I was also unsure of how to input special effects onto my main task using final cut pro, therefore I decided to use youtube to show me how to do that. The video below is the one that showed me how to use special effects using final cut pro.

Health and Safety Information
Before our group decided to carry out our two minute opening to our thriller genre, we thought that it would be a good idea to get all the health and safety aspects clear and out of the way in case of any emergencies. Before we started, we made sure that we had each other’s phone numbers saved on our phones; we also made sure that we all knew the set emergency numbers. For example:
Fire Brigade = 999
Police Officers = 999
Ambulance = 999
We also constructed a risk assessment in which we outlined all the possible hazards that could occur when filming and we spoke together thinking of the ways that we can all work together to prevent any of the risks happening.

Hazards
People who can be harmed
Properties that can be damaged
Risk controls already in place
Risk Assesment (Extreme, High, Moderate, Low,
Further Action in order to control risk
Someone tripping over the equipment
Public

We also thought it would be a good idea to take further action in case one of these things were to unexpectedly happen. The further action that we decided to take is that we will keep a First Aid Kit with us at all times. Due to the fact that we were filming the majority of the film at Jamal’s house, we decided that we will leave him in charge of looking after the first aid kit due to the fact that it was his house. His parents were in so they could’ve always been there to help as well if someone had unexpectedly got hurt.
